Working with area schools, LINK volunteers are able to pick up surplus unopened, perishable items from school lunches, and include them in our food deliveries. The program began in March 2012 with one elementary school – Dranesville Elementary (Fairfax County) with a big kick-off ceremony. By December 2012, LINK was rescuing food from six elementary schools (five in Fairfax County and one in Loudoun County). Beginning in 2014, LINK began rescuing food on a county-wide basis in Loudoun County. The food typically rescued includes individual milk cartons, yogurt, fruit, and snacks. LINK is able to include the food in the regular weekly food deliveries to families and also shares the food with Cascade Village Apartments and Embry Rucker Shelter.
Volunteers are needed to pick up the food on a weekly basis during the school day. The day and time varies depending on the school's needs. To see a list of our current needs, click here.
